Hearing Aids: Tips on Purchasing
hearing aids July 6th, 2010
When it comes to choosing the right hearing instrument, listen to your hearing professional, not to anybody. Hearing professionals have the education and training that make them uniquely qualified to help you, do not prescribe for yourself.
Fiting for hearing devices is not as easy as being fit for a pair of shoes. Most of the time, giving up is a huge mistake. It can often take several follow-up visits before getting the right fit for you. Always buy hearing aids with a trial period, if they aren’t right for you, you can have them returned.
Some think that buying hearing aids in a physician’s office is ideal and it should be the best place to buy, actually no, because even though you are in a Physician’s office and probably working with an Audiologist, they generally know nothing about hearing aids. They can prescribe medications and perform surgery, but not fit hearing aids.
Buying hearing aids through mail order or direct online are fine, but it doesn’t refer to companies that include local professional care, they are companies that sell the cheap $19.95 products, or quality hearing aids without professional care. Not one major hearing aid manufacturer authorizes the sale of their products without direct professional care.
Don’t wait till hearing loss is worse to get the help you need, it might develop to auditory deprivation. Auditory deprivation can occur when someone does not wear any hearing aids, or when they wear one, but need two aids.
