Bluetooth in Your Hearing Aids

Posted by admin on October 29th, 2010

Bluetooth technology changed the Information Age for good the moment it was introduced. With this specialized Bluetooth technology, information that once had to flow over vast networks of wires to get to its destination can now get there wire-free. This technological work of art is as close to magic as scientifically based technology is allowed to be.

The smallest Bluetooth device currently available is the Bluetooth Ear Level Instrument. It has been designed to transform traditional behind the ear hearing aids into Bluetooth hearing aids, created so that the hearing impaired can enjoy crystal clear mobile phone transmissions. The Bluetooth hearing aids also allow their user’s wireless access to MP3s, computers, and High Definition Televisions. This is created so that they can have their hands free to perform other tasks while they are using those items.

This is how Bluetooth hearing aids work: the ELI fastens to the direct audio input connection on behind the ear hearing aids. With its microphone transmitter and receiver “converses’ wirelessly with the BTEs, turning them into Bluetooth hearing aids capable of communicating with any Bluetooth- enabled device.

The ELI Bluetooth hearing aids are very simple to operate. They have one button with which users can either connect to or reject incoming calls, without having to touch their cell phones. The digital technology incorporated in the ELI enabled Bluetooth hearing aids means their audio transmissions occur with none of the buzzing and distortion. This often affects cell phone-to-hearing aid reception; Bluetooth hearing aid reception has a “right in the room” quality.

Throw Away Hearing Aids

Posted by admin on October 29th, 2010

Throw away hearing aids are a diminutive, mushroom like, soft cap that goes inside the ear canal like traditional hearing aids. These hearing aids life expectancy is up to forty days and the battery dies, and then you throw them away. There are many advantages that disposable hearing aids have over traditional, here are some of them:

1. There is no long wait to have a hearing aid while they manufacture the traditional hearing aids, a disposable hearing aid is available as soon as you fill your prescription.

2. When the battery expires in a disposable hearing aid, you throw it out and buy a new one, people with arthritis or that have issues with changing the traditional hearing aid batteries benefit from disposable hearing aids as they just throw them out and purchase a new one.

4. Because you only wear throw away hearing aids for a month or two, there is not the wax buildup or canal blockage that can occur from regular hearing aids, a much easier and safer way in wearing hearing aids.

5. There is no upkeep or maintenance with disposable hearing aids. No further expenses like traditions ones and if there is a problem with the disposable ones, just take them back for fast replacement. So, instead of having to dish out a lot of bucks to purchase a custom hearing aid, the disposable ones cost approximately a dollar a day, this is far more affordable especially for anyone the lives on a budget.

Hearing Aid Features

Posted by admin on October 29th, 2010

Noise reduction doesn’t really reduce noise; it reduces amplification in the frequencies where there is noise and no speech. If there is a fan running in the background, the hearing aid will not amplify it as much as it will speech, when the hearing aid finds both speech and noise at a frequency, you still get both. More advanced the hearing aids manage noise better, it breaks the frequencies up into smaller pieces.

There are two types of memories available on a hearing aid, manual and automatic, many hearing aids have a push button that allows you to have different settings for different situations such as quiet places, noisy places, and music or telephone. The hearing aid beeps when you push the button to let you know which memory you are using, advanced hearing aids can have memories that are automatic so instead of pushing a button, the hearing aid does it for you.

Feedback or that annoying whistling sound is the number one complaint people have about hearing aids. Most hearing aid wearers experience feedback when they put their hand over their ear, or use the phone, feedback Cancellation will take down the amount of feedback that you hear.

Bands are what we use to adjust the volume in a hearing aid, more bands means more control when we program the hearing aid to your hearing loss.

Channels are used to adjust the part of the hearing aid that keeps the sound from getting too loud. It can also refer to the hearing aid noise reduction system, more channels is definitely better.

Seven Primary Styles of Hearing Aids

Posted by admin on October 27th, 2010

In the Ear (ITE) – they are the largest custom style of hearing aid, filling the bowl of your ear, and can have the most power and features available for in the ear hearing aids.

Half Shell (HS)- a custom hearing aid that only fills about half the bowl of your ear, they are able to have a good deal of power and features, use a smaller battery.

In the Canal (ITC)- the next smallest size is the custom ITC hearing aid, harder to see than the larger hearing aids, but also not able to have as much power or as many features.

Mini Canal (MC) – they are smaller than the ITC hearing aid. The custom mini canal uses a smaller battery and has even less power available and its features can also be more limited.

Completely in the Canal (CIC) – the smallest custom in the ear hearing aid and very popular due to its cosmetic appeal and ease of use. There are usually no manual controls on a CIC, telephone usage is better because they are less likely to whistle.

Behind the Ear (BTE) – it sits behind your ear and is connected to your ear by a tube with an ear mold attached having the most power and features available.

Open Ear (OE) and Receiver in Canal (RIC) – fairly new style of BTE made available in recent years and are much smaller than a traditional BTE, meant primarily for high frequency hearing loss. It is connected to your ear by a very thin tube or wire with a small ear bud on the tip.

Cell Phone Hearing Aid Compatibility

Posted by admin on October 20th, 2010
You may know that they often have trouble using cell phones if you have family members or patients who use hearing aids. Some cell phones cause radiofrequency interference with hearing aids, so the user hears high-pitched whistling sounds through the hearing aid, or static, or thumping sounds, but all cell phones aren’t alike in this respect.
Some phones have lower radiofrequency emissions or different technology that can reduce the unwanted effects on hearing aids, so you should advise hearing aid wearers shopping for a hearing aid compatible cell phone to try several brands and models before they decide.  The more immune your hearing aid is to radiofrequency interference, the less likely you are to experience interference noise from wireless devices. Hearing aid wearers should always ask cell phone carriers what the emissions ratings are for any new phone being considered for purchase. Cell phone providers should have this information available.
Hearing Aid Compatibility Rating Scales- Hearing Aid Compatible (HAC) compliant device packages are marked with “M” or “T” ratings. The M-rating refers to the microphone mode, the T-rating refers to the telecoil mode.
M-Ratings- Wireless devices rated M3 or M4 meet FCC requirements and are likely to generate less interference to hearing devices than wireless devices that are not labeled, M4 is the better/higher of the two ratings, so the higher the M-rating the handset has the lower the Radio Frequency emissions level and higher signal quality the handset will have.
1.     M3-rating indicates the handset has satisfied the ANSI standard
2.     M4-rating indicates the handset has exceeded the ANSI standard

Digital Over Analog

Posted by admin on October 18th, 2010
Today’s digital hearing aids are the most popular form of hearing amplification in use. That is due largely to the many advantages they have over older, analog hearing aids. Although digital models cost a bit more than analog, the improved control, clarity and reliability makes them well worth the investment and they are better than Analog.
One of the most obvious advantages of digital hearing aids is the increased quality of your hearing, computer chips in digital hearing aids are precisely programmed so they more accurately correct your hearing loss.Digital hearing aids convert sound into discreet units that can be continually adjusted by the hearing aid’s computer chip leading to improved sound quality. Each individual sound unit is precisely adjusted, and are put back together for instant listening.
The precision adjustment of digital hearing aids is a major part of their popularity, your audiologist can precisely tune a digital hearing aid to match and work with your specific type and degree of hearing loss and are customized and can be reprogrammed to accommodate changes in an individual’s hearing.
The computer chip in digital hearing aids makes it easier for the wearer to make his or her own adjustments and take advantage of a variety of options not available with most analog hearing aids, feedback control eliminates the sharp whistle or squawk of a hearing aid when it is used too near a telephone or other device, or when you hug someone. Digital hearing aids have fewer unpleasant sound “side effects” that are common with analog devices.
