Hearing Aids: When it Began

Posted by admin on June 30th, 2010
Suffering from hearing impairedness, people experiences changes in their physical and emotional being because they are less understood sometimes, making them feel off and unwanted because of their situation. Then, it is so hard to bear losing your hearing sense, until they finally got their answer, hearing aids.
One of the most important creations for people who suffer hearing loss, hearing aid is a device that enables them to hear sounds, it does help them in a way that they would be able to be aware about what is going on around. It has been around for decades, gets a bad rap from the very start they became the butt of jokes. In some old comic books from the sixties and seventies, a grandfather uses a horn-shaped trumpet style hearing aid and keeps saying “what?”Hearing aids began crudely as large trumpets and horns, and then they became transitory radio style devices but still bulky and uncomfortable to wear. Later on became smaller behind the ear devices.
Thanks to technology, some modern hearing aids are even implantable and therefore invisible. There are manufacturers have recognized the importance of preserving hearing aid history such as, Oticon has an Eriksholm Museum in Denmark for showcasing old hearing aids. In addition, in New York City, you can visit the hearing aid museum at the League for the Hard of Hearing, where they are showcasing more than 50 hearing aids from the 1880s to the 1980s at the League. The decorated silver ear trumpet is particularly fascinating.

Hearing impairment can happen to a person right after birth, but there are some cases as well that a person loses their sense to hear because of accident, illnesses, or other incidents that could cause damage to the ears. There are some types of illnesses that could cause a person to be deaf especially if it is taken care of immediately. Hearing impairment is classified differently with each other. It is very important for hearing impairment to be identified not only to know them but to see if how they could help us in preventing hearing loss to happen.
Severity of a hearing impairment is being ranked according to the loudness which is measured in decibels (dB)) that is before the sound is being detected by an individual. Hearing impairment is being ranked as mild, moderate, severe or profound. For adults, mild can be between 25 and 40 dB and for children, between 20 and 40 dB. Understanding Hearing Impairment

Posted by admin on June 24th, 2010
Losing just any sense that our body have is a difficult situation to deal with. This can affect us both physically and emotionally. Most of the time, people with impairment becomes problematic and some times irritated. Losing the ability to her is one of the most difficult thing to happen to a person. How much more if this happens to a child.
When a child experiences a complication which involves hearing loss, it is important to consider available solutions to avoid further damage on the child hearing ability. The use of hearing aid is one common way or solution for hearing loss problems, and this also tested to be very helpful for a hearing impaired child so to avoid the continuing hearing loss.
Pediatric audiologist suggest hearing aids and hearing devices for children known as Category 1, generally classified by the FDA. There are also some devices that are classified much higher according to the hearing requirement needed by the user. Though Category 1 hearing aids may not be enough for your child, this can be more ample if you are considering the cost issues of the hearing aid.
Over-the-counter hearing aids are also characterized as Category 1 devices or hearing amplification devices. More parents would more likely choose this type of devices compared to hearing aids prescribed by expert because OTC hearing aids cost lesser. But we must also consider that this could create a greater health risk to your child and even lead to further loss of hearing.

Here are some ways of preventing hearing loss:
Conductive hearing loss happens when sounds are not properly conducted through the ear, general reduction in sound level usually caused by blockage in the ears like ear wax or infection that may affect the sound from travelling properly in the ears.
Sensorineural hearing loss happens when the middle ear or the nerve pathways of the ear have damage. Some of the factors that contribute to this type of hearing loss can be long exposure to loud sounds.
Mixed hearing loss is a combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing losses, happening when the inner and outer areas of the ears have damage.
These are some ways to prevent hearing loss. Safe level of volume when listening to TV or radio, using over-the-ears ears headphones have noise cancellation which is safe compared to ear buds, protect your ears from noise by using ear plugs or ear muffs as safety measures to protect your ears from damage, and minimize long time of exposing your ears to loud sounds. Hearing Aids: Loudness Amplification

Posted by admin on June 22nd, 2010
Loudness amplification for a hearing aid is important for this can characterize the amount of sound required for the user. The purpose of this loudness amplification is to amplify the soft or low-toned sounds. However complaints from the users says that there is increase in loudness amplification or the loudness of sounds seems even louder which results to dissatisfaction and uncomfortablity among users. In this case the hearing aid technician plays a big role for they can tell you about the ways in which loudness is going to be managed with the particular hearing aid device you have selected.
Hearing aids are devices that are helpful for persons who have hearing problems. This device is useful for them to be able to hear the sounds of the things around them like nature, vehicles, music and most especially to hear what people are saying.
There are different types of hearing that are available to use, one common  type of hearing aids are the disposable hearing aids, though very efficient but doesn’t last long so you have to buy another after the other one is used up. There are hearing aids that are customized as well, very useful and a bit expensive.
Upon the initial fitting of the hearing aid, users may experience the continuing distortion of sounds but as it goes along the process of follow-up fitting process, modifications will be tested until it gives the user a pleasant sound, it is important that you should continue to wear the hearing aid as recommended by the technician.

Knowing the Levels of Hearing Impairment

Posted by admin on June 18th, 2010
Hearing impairment- a disability which involves the incapacity of a certain person to hear any sound or partly losing the sense of hearing that can be very common to older persons which are medically derived as presbycusis.
We must take care of our ears to lessen the possibility of losing our sense of hearing at a young age. We can’t afford not to hear loud sounds especially if we are working on places prone in loud sounds like machines, vehicles, and airplanes.
Here are the different levels of hearing impairment:
0 – No impairment- a loss of 25 dB where people with this degree of hearing ability can be able to hear whispers.
1 – Slight impairment- a loss of 26 – 40 dB at this level a person can still hear some words spoken in a normal voice at 1 meter.
2 – Moderate impairment – a loss of 41 – 60 dB at this level person can hear and repeat words spoken in a raised voice at 1 meter, normally hearing aids are needed.
3 – Severe impairment – a loss of 61 – 80 dB at this level a person can hear some words when shouted into the ear. Hearing aids are mostly needed.
4 – Profound impairment – a loss of 81 dB or greater where at this level a person is unable to hear and understand a shouted voice. Hearing aids may help understanding words in some cases. Teaching lip reading and sign language is a must.

Differentiating Hearing Loss

Posted by admin on June 17th, 2010
Hearing loss can be common to adults especially when they reach older ages. When we grow old, each and every one of us has the tendency to loss the sense of hearing.  Those who are not taking good care of their ears or those who are engaged in mechanical jobs that get them exposed to loud sounds have more possibilities to loss their hearing sense in an early age, worst is losing it completely.
There are several reasons for hearing loss, though all of us have the tendency to experience hearing loss, there are still reasons or causes that could result to hearing loss, like diseases, accidents and exposing your ears to loud sounds for longer time.
Presbycusis is the medical term for age-related hearing loss, which is considered to have cumulative effects of aging on the ears. Hearing loss mostly begins after age 60 according to medical studies and more likely occur to most of the men than women.condition in which it harder to hear high-pitched tones than low-pitched ones. As we grow old, it takes time for us to notice that we are having a difficulty in hearing because it doesn’t immediately occurs.
It is important to take care of our ears especially when we are still at a young age to lessen the possibility of acquiring it too soon. There are a lot of ways to take care of our ears like minimizing the exposure of our ears to loud soundz, using ear plugs or ear muffs can also be a safety measure.
