History of Hearing Aids

Posted by admin on February 8th, 2010

People who are suffering from hearing impairedness experiences changes in their physical and emotional being. This can be because they are less understood sometimes, making them feel off and unwanted because of their situation.

Hearing aid is one of the most important creations for people who suffer hearing loss. This device enables them to hear sounds, though not clearly as what we do, but it does help them in a way that they would be able to be aware about what is going on around.

Hearing aids began crudely as large trumpets and horns. Then they became transistor radio style devices but still bulky and uncomfortable to wear. Later on became smaller behind the ear devices (BTEs). Thanks to technology, some modern hearing aids are even implantable and therefore invisible.

Hearing aids have been around for decades, gets a bad rap from the very start they became the butt of jokes. In some old comic books from the sixties and seventies, a grandfather uses a horn-shaped trumpet style hearing aid and keeps saying “what?”

There are manufacturers have recognized the importance of preserving hearing aid history. For example, Oticon has an Eriksholm Museum in Denmark for showcasing old hearing aids. The museum has the ancient trumpet style hearing aids, a transistor style hearing aid, and early behind-the-ear aids.

In addition, in New York City, you can visit the hearing aid museum at the League for the Hard of Hearing. More than 50 hearing aids from the 1880s to the 1980s are showcased at the League. The decorated silver ear trumpet is particularly fascinating.

Levels of Hearing Impairment

Posted by admin on January 28th, 2010

Hearing impairment is a disability which involves the incapacity of a certain person to hear any sound or partly losing the sense of hearing. This case can be very common to older persons which are medically derived as presbycusis.

Taking care of our ears is a must; we have to do this to lessen the possibility of losing our sense of hearing at a young age. Sometimes we can’t afford not to hear loud sounds especially if we are working on places prone in loud sounds like machines, vehicles, airplanes, etc.

We can make ourselves ready for this situation by knowing the different levels of hearing impairment.

0 – No impairment- a loss of 25 dB where people with this degree of hearing ability can be able to hear whispers.

1 – Slight impairment- a loss of 26 – 40 dB at this level a person can still hear some words spoken in a normal voice at 1 meter.

2 – Moderate impairment – a loss of 41 – 60 dB at this level person can hear and repeat words spoken in a raised voice at 1 meter, normally hearing aids are needed.

3 – Severe impairment – a loss of 61 – 80 dB at this level a person can hear some words when shouted into the ear. Hearing aids are mostly needed.

4 – Profound impairment – a loss of 81 dB or greater where at this level a person is unable to hear and understand a shouted voice. Hearing aids may help understanding words in some cases. Teaching lip reading and sign language is a must.

The Basic Types of Hearing Tests

Posted by admin on January 25th, 2010

For cases like hearing loss, we wanted to make sure that we are not into getting ourselves loss our sense to hear. It is very important to know your condition as early as possible in order to prevent a certain condition from getting worst. This is the reason why children who are in a very young age already have series of test to see and make sure their hearing condition. It is an advantage for parents because they would be able to get their selves prepared for the measures that they are going to take in order to prevent the condition of their child’s health.

Technology had helped us in a big way because of the devices that hearing impaired person’s are using to at least experience living a normal life, of course it is not almost the same but it can give them the opportunity to hear as if they don’t suffer hearing loss.

Here are basic types of hearing tests:

Tympanometry -using sound and pressure from a device that is placed in one ear, this measures the tightness of the eardrum. A loud noise is heard from the device, causing the eardrum to vibrate. There is no discomfort associated with this test. The other ear will be tested in the same fashion.

Speech Audiometry – using an earphones, you will hear a technician recite words at varying volume levels. You will then be asked to repeat what you heard, though there is a glass panel through which you can see one another, you won’t be able to read the technicians lips. The words are heard through ear pieces a mixed with background sounds, seems like talking to someone in a crowd.

Tone Recognition – series of tones will be played on the headphones, – As you hear the tones, you will either press a button device or raise your hand indicating that you heard the tone, then continues with tones of varying pitch and volume. When the technician plays a sound that you do not indicate hearing, the sound will be played again slightly louder to determine the absolute lowest or highest pitch or volume that you can hear.

Pure Tone Bone Conduction Hearing - a single ear piece is placed in one ear, then a second device like a headband with round pads at each end is placed over the head. One pad is placed in the hair near the temple on the side of the head with the ear piece, one on the opposite ear. A series of tones are played and you respond when you hear the tone, a test is to stimulate the auditory nerve through vibration of bones in the skull.
